Introduction: Teemu Mattsson is a versatile Finnish Jazz trumpetist. He is born 20th of January in 1975 in Kotka, Finland. Mattsson is a graduate from Sibelius-Academy Jazz Departement and most recently he has held the position of the lead trumpet chair in the world-renowned Umo Jazz Orchestra. This shows that as a jazz player Mattsson knows his way around both as a lead and section player and as a strong and unique improvisor. Mattsson also leads his own quintet and their first cd was released in may 2006. Education: Teemu Mattsson started his musical life when he was six years old. His first instrument was piano which he still uses frequently when he composes new material. Trumpet came along when he was ten. Mattsson has lived his childhood in Kotka. The musical culture there is strong and that gave a good base for learning to play in many kinds of situations, for example big bands, orchestras and smaller bands. In year 1996 Mattsson was accepted in Sibelius-Academy. There he studied with many great players and teachers like Tim Hagans, Jukka Perko, Jukkis Uotila, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew and Ingrid Jensen. Some of them were visiting lecturers in the academy. He was also playing in workshops and concerts with Dave Liebmann, Wayne Krantz, Palle Mikkeborg, Jim Beard and many other. In the future Mattsson hopes to develope himself as a lead player and also continue to compose and perform his own music. Quintet: Teemu Mattsson's band has released first record in may 2006. That record is available worlwidely. Musicians in the quintet are: Mikael Jakobsson, keys; Ville Herrala, bass; Teemu Eronen, drums; Ari Jokelainen, sax. Record also includes Mongo Aaltonen, percussion; Teemu Viinikainen, guitar and Teemu Seppälä, vocals. Record is produced by Vesa-Matti Mattsson and Teemu himself. Music could be described as a Scandinavian or European style of jazz. Bands interest is to find strong melodies and moods with simple musical elements. Second album "Intuition" is released in autumn 2008. It represents similar style of music as first one. New flavour is also included by more collectively improvised solo sections. The basic quintet is same as in previous album. There are also two guests: Jarmo Saari in guitar and pedal steel and Aila Hettula in oboe and english horn. Listen to the mp3-samples in music section.
Umo Jazz Orchestra: Teemu Mattsson started as a lead player in Umo Jazz Orchestra in january 2005. He shares the lead vacance with a swedish trumpetist Jan Kohlin. Other members of the trumpet section are Timo Paasonen, Tero Saarti and Mikko Pettinen. Umo is the only professional big band in Finland. Riku Niemi Orchestra: Teemu has been playing lead trumpet in this great band since spring 2007. This orchestra is a big band with ten string players and it works with finnish top singers like Jorma Kääriäinen.
